How much should a Beagle eat?

Adult weight range 8–11 kg · adult feeding factors apply from 10–12 months of age · raw rate 3.0% of body weight. Portions below are computed with the same veterinary formula as the main calculator — not copied from a bag chart.

Short answer: adult Beagles (8–11 kg) need about 533–676 kcal/day — roughly 130–165 g of typical kibble (370 kcal/100 g), about 1.3–1.6 cups — depending on weight, sex and activity. A typical 9.5 kg adult needs about 606 kcal/day, or 285 g/day raw at 3.0%.

Worked example

Worked example: a 9.5 kg Beagle

A 9.5 kg adult Beagle (neutered): RER 379 × 1.6 = 606 kcal − 61 kcal treats ÷ 3.7 kcal/g = 147 g — that is 74 g per meal, twice a day. The same arithmetic runs in the calculator above: change the weight or the life stage and every number follows.

Feeding notes for the Beagle

Small breeds reach adult factors early (10–12 months) and hold weight easily; the 1.6× default with two measured meals a day is the reliable baseline for this size class.

What makes feeding a Beagle different: Beagles are famously food-driven and skilled at finding food that was not offered. Measure every gram, count training treats inside the daily number, and keep food out of reach — a Beagle's appetite is not a reliable portion guide.

Health, treats and the senior years: Beagles that gain weight young tend to stay heavy for life, and the extra kilos raise the risk of diabetes and joint strain — the treat budget is the whole battle. In the senior years, a lean Beagle with a visible waist moves better and longer than a heavy one on any joint supplement.

Training, treats and everyday feeding: Beagles need the food locked away as much as measured: a Beagle-proof bin, closed doors, and no food left on counters, because the nose always wins. Use a puzzle feeder or scatter feeding in the garden — it slows a Beagle down and turns a two-minute meal into twenty minutes of work.

Weight & condition for the Beagle: Beagles are the breed most likely to be overfed by the whole household: everyone gives just one treat, and the Beagle accepts them all. Agree one measured daily portion (147 g for a 9.5 kg adult) and one treat budget, and keep food behind closed doors — a Beagle that counter-surfs is not being naughty, it is being a Beagle.

Body condition check: Judge the portion by the dog, not just the table: on the 9-point body condition scale, aim for 4–5 — ribs easily felt under a thin fat cover, a waist visible from above, a tuck from the side. If you can't feel the ribs, feed 10% less than the table even if the weight looks right; if ribs show, feed 10% more.

Puppies of this size class reach adult factors at about 10–12 months; until then, growth portions follow the puppy factors (×3.0 under 4 months, tapering to ×2.0 by 8 months) on current weight, recalculated every two weeks. Individual dogs vary by up to ±50% from any formula — the scale and your hands on the ribs outrank this table.

Questions

Beagle feeding questions

How much food should a Beagle eat per day?

Across the full adult weight range (8–11 kg), a Beagle needs about 533–676 kcal/day — 130–165 g of typical kibble (370 kcal/100 g) after the 10% treat allowance is removed — depending on weight, sex and activity. A typical adult at the middle of the range (9.5 kg) needs about 606 kcal/day, roughly 147 g, split over 2 meals.

How many meals a day should a Beagle eat?

Two meals a day is right for a Beagle: about 74 g per meal from a daily total of 147 g (606 kcal) for a 9.5 kg adult. One meal invites the beagle's signature trick — bolting, then looking for more — and free feeding in a scent hound is an open invitation to gain weight. Use a slow feeder or a food puzzle to stretch each meal, and lock the food away between meals.

How many cups of food does a Beagle need per day?

About 147 g/day is roughly 1.5 cups at the typical density of 100 g per cup — but cups vary by up to 40% between kibbles, so weigh the grams once and the question disappears. A cup is a volume; grams are the portion. At this size the margin is tiny — a heaped cup instead of a level one can add a fifth of the whole day, which is why a gram scale pays off most for small dogs.

How do I switch a Beagle to a new food?

Over 7 days: 25% new food for 2 days, 50% for 2 days, 75% for 2 days, then 100% — keeping the total daily grams at the number on this page throughout. Small dogs should not skip meals during a switch: if your Beagle refuses the new mix for more than a day, slow down and check with your vet rather than letting them go hungry. If stools loosen, hold at the current mix for an extra day or two.

How much should a Beagle puppy eat?

Small-breed puppies reach adult factors at about 10–12 months. Use ×3.0 under 4 months, tapering to ×2.0 by 8 months, on current weight, recalculated every two weeks — growth is quick at this size and the answer changes monthly.

How much raw food does a Beagle need?

At the size-correct BARF rate of 3.0% of ideal body weight, a 9.5 kg Beagle eats about 285 g of raw food per day — split 70% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% liver, 5% other organ, 10% vegetables and fruit on the BARF model.

How does feeding a Beagle change as they age?

From about 10–12 months a Beagle counts as fully adult; the senior shift usually arrives years later, when activity and muscle mass fall. The calculator's senior factor (×1.4 instead of ×1.6) trims a 9.5 kg Beagle from 606 to about 530 kcal/day — roughly 129 g of typical kibble. Make the change gradually and judge by body condition, not birthdays alone: a still-active older Beagle may hold condition on the adult number.

Why is my Beagle always begging for food?

Beagles were bred to work for food rewards all day, and their appetite has no off switch. Begging is not hunger: a 9.5 kg adult fed its full 606 kcal/day is not underfed, however convincing the performance. Count every treat inside the daily number and weigh monthly — Beagles gain in small increments that add up fast.

How much exercise does a Beagle need to keep its weight down?

Food matters more than exercise for weight: one uncounted chew can undo an hour's walk. Keep the portion at 147 g/day, walk daily for fitness, and let the scale — not the walk — do the weight control.
