What 80/10/10 gets right — and what it leaves out
The prey model is simple and, for healthy adult dogs, broadly workable. Its known gaps: no plant matter means no fermentable fibre source for the gut, and whole-prey imitations often run short on iodine, vitamin E, vitamin D, manganese and omega-3s unless the meat rotation includes oily fish, eggs or a supplement. Many experienced PMR feeders add those — at which point it is "PMR plus", and that is fine.
Bone at 10% is an average target. Chalk-white, crumbly stools mean too much; persistent looseness can mean too little. Adjust in 2% steps and let the dog in front of you arbitrate.
Transition plan: 10 days to fully raw
Most adult dogs switch in about 10 days. Sensitive stomachs: stretch each step to 4–5 days. Puppies, seniors and unwell dogs: switch under your vet's eye.
| Days | Raw food | Current food |
|---|---|---|
| 1–3 | 25% | 75% |
| 4–6 | 50% | 50% |
| 7–9 | 75% | 25% |
| Day 10+ | 100% | 0% |
Loose stool in the first days is common — hold at the current step until it firms up. Feed bony meals (wings, necks) once the dog is on 100% raw; introduce one protein at a time so a reaction has an obvious culprit.
Real foods for each part of the split
Muscle meat
Beef chunks and mince, chicken and turkey thigh, pork shoulder, lamb trim — plus the cheap powerhouses: heart and gizzards count as muscle meat, not organ.
Edible bones
Raw meaty bones sized to the dog: chicken wings, necks and backs; duck necks; turkey necks for big dogs; chicken feet. Never cooked bones — cooking makes them splinter.
Liver & secreting organs
Liver is non-negotiable (vitamin A, copper) — beef or chicken. The second organ slot is kidney first, then spleen, pancreas, brain or testicles where you can get them.
Veg & fruit (BARF only)
Lightly steamed or blitzed leafy greens, carrot, broccoli, courgette, blueberries, apple (no pips). Plant matter is a fibre and phytonutrient extra — never the base.
Bone equivalents: how much whole food makes 50 g of bone
The bone slot is ~10% of the day. Bone content varies by cut and source, so treat these as planning numbers, not lab values.
| Raw meaty bone | Approx. bone content | For ~50 g of bone, feed |
|---|---|---|
| Chicken wings | ~46% | ≈ 110 g wings |
| Chicken necks (with skin) | ~36% | ≈ 140 g necks |
| Chicken backs | ~44% | ≈ 115 g backs |
| Duck necks | ~50% | ≈ 100 g necks |
| Turkey necks | ~45% | ≈ 110 g necks |
| Chicken feet | ~60% | ≈ 85 g feet |
Approximate — bone content varies by cut, source and how the piece is trimmed. Sources: USDA FoodData Central composition entries for each cut and the raw meaty bone chart at Primal Pooch, cross-checked November 2026.
How to use this calculator
Enter your dog's weight
Enter your dog's ideal body weight. Raw feeding is dosed as a percentage of body weight, not by calories.
Choose BARF or PMR
Choose BARF (with vegetables and fruit) or PMR (prey model, no plant matter). The model sets the component ratios.
Set the daily rate
Set the daily rate as a percentage of body weight — or tap an activity preset, from 1.5% for weight loss up to 4% for performance dogs.
Read the component split
Read the daily gram split: muscle meat, raw meaty bones, liver, other organs — plus vegetables on BARF. Per meal = daily amount ÷ meals per day.
Frequently asked
What does 80/10/10 mean in raw feeding?
80% muscle meat (including fatty cuts, heart and green tripe count as meat), 10% raw edible bone, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ such as kidney or spleen.
Is 80/10/10 balanced for puppies?
No — growing dogs, especially large breeds, need controlled calcium and phosphorus. Puppies on raw should be professionally formulated, not percentage-guessed.
How much 80/10/10 for a 10 kg dog?
250 g/day at 2.5%: 200 g meat, 25 g bone, 12–13 g liver, 12–13 g organ.
How does a 10 kg dog's raw food split?
At 2.5% of body weight: 250 g/day — 175 g muscle meat, 25 g raw edible bone, 13 g liver, 13 g other secreting organ and 25 g vegetables and fruit on the BARF model.
Which raw bones are safe?
Raw, meaty bones sized to the dog, always supervised. Never cooked bones — they splinter. And no weight-bearing bones from large animals for power chewers.
