Why portions don't scale in a straight line

Double the dog and you do not double the food. Energy needs scale with weight to the power of 0.75, so a 40 kg dog eats about 2.8× what a 10 kg dog eats — not 4×. This is why generic "1 cup per 10 kg" style rules overfeed big dogs and underfeed small ones.

It is also why ideal weight matters more than the number on the scale today. An overweight 30 kg dog whose ideal weight is 26 kg should be fed for 26 kg — feeding the fat maintains the fat.

Use the table for a fast answer and the calculator when your food isn't a typical 370 kcal/100 g kibble, because a 410 kcal food and a 340 kcal food give portions roughly 20% apart for the same dog.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much food for a 30 kg dog?

A neutered adult 30 kg dog needs ~1,436 kcal/day; on typical kibble that is about 349 g/day after a 10% treat allowance, split across 2 meals at ~175 g each.

How much should a small 3 kg dog eat?

Around 237 kcal/day (neutered), roughly 58 g of typical kibble. Small dogs need more calories per kg than large dogs, but the absolute amount is small — a 10 g scooping error is a big deal at this size.

My dog's weight is between rows — what do I do?

Use the calculator above with the exact weight. The table is for speed; the formula is continuous and handles any weight.

How much food does a 15 kg dog need?

At 15 kg: RER 534 kcal, daily target 854 kcal, and about 208 g of typical kibble (370 kcal/100 g) per day with treats removed, split over 2 meals.

Should I enter current or ideal weight?

Ideal weight. If your dog needs to lose, enter the target weight: the formula should feed the dog they are meant to be, not the current overweight.
