Raw Dog Food Calculator

Raw feeding is percentage feeding: a share of ideal body weight per day, split into components. Choose BARF or PMR, set the rate, and get every component in grams — plus the weekly shop.

Short answer: most adult dogs eat raw at 2–3% of ideal body weight per day (2.5% is the standard start). A 20 kg dog at 2.5% eats 500 g/day — BARF split: 350 g muscle meat, 50 g bone, 25 g liver, 25 g other organ, 50 g veg and fruit.

BARF vs PMR, and getting the percentages right

BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) splits the ration 70% muscle meat, 10% raw edible bone, 5% liver, 5% other secreting organ (kidney, spleen, pancreas), 10% vegetables and fruit. PMR (Prey Model Raw) drops the plants: 80/10/5/5.

The percentages are a weekly balance, not a daily straitjacket — you can feed liver and organ in two larger meals a week instead of daily pinches, as long as the week's totals land. Bone percentage is the one to watch daily: too little and stools loosen, too much and they chalk and constipate.

Safety, plainly: raw meat carries bacterial risk to dogs and to the humans handling it — freeze, thaw in the fridge, wash everything, and keep raw feeding away from immunocompromised households. A badly unbalanced raw diet is worse than a decent kibble; the splits above are the minimum structure, and growing puppies need professional formulation.

Switching to raw

Transition plan: 10 days to fully raw

Most adult dogs switch in about 10 days. Sensitive stomachs: stretch each step to 4–5 days. Puppies, seniors and unwell dogs: switch under your vet's eye.

Loose stool in the first days is common — hold at the current step until it firms up. Feed bony meals (wings, necks) once the dog is on 100% raw; introduce one protein at a time so a reaction has an obvious culprit.

What to actually buy

Real foods for each part of the split

Muscle meat

Beef chunks and mince, chicken and turkey thigh, pork shoulder, lamb trim — plus the cheap powerhouses: heart and gizzards count as muscle meat, not organ.

Edible bones

Raw meaty bones sized to the dog: chicken wings, necks and backs; duck necks; turkey necks for big dogs; chicken feet. Never cooked bones — cooking makes them splinter.

Liver & secreting organs

Liver is non-negotiable (vitamin A, copper) — beef or chicken. The second organ slot is kidney first, then spleen, pancreas, brain or testicles where you can get them.

Veg & fruit (BARF only)

Lightly steamed or blitzed leafy greens, carrot, broccoli, courgette, blueberries, apple (no pips). Plant matter is a fibre and phytonutrient extra — never the base.

Bone equivalents: how much whole food makes 50 g of bone

The bone slot is ~10% of the day. Bone content varies by cut and source, so treat these as planning numbers, not lab values.

Step by step

How to use this calculator

1

Enter your dog's weight

Enter your dog's ideal body weight. Raw feeding is dosed as a percentage of body weight, not by calories.

2

Choose BARF or PMR

Choose BARF (with vegetables and fruit) or PMR (prey model, no plant matter). The model sets the component ratios.

3

Set the daily rate

Set the daily rate as a percentage of body weight — or tap an activity preset, from 1.5% for weight loss up to 4% for performance dogs.

4

Read the component split

Read the daily gram split: muscle meat, raw meaty bones, liver, other organs — plus vegetables on BARF. Per meal = daily amount ÷ meals per day.

Questions

Frequently asked

How much raw food for a 20 kg dog?

At the standard 2.5% rate: 500 g/day. BARF split — 350 g muscle meat, 50 g raw edible bone, 25 g liver, 25 g other organ, 50 g vegetables/fruit.

What percentage should puppies eat raw?

Far more: roughly 8–10% of current body weight for young puppies, tapering through 6% and 4% to the adult 2–3% by about 12 months.

Can I feed half raw, half kibble?

Yes — calculate each half separately with its own tool (raw % for the raw half, kcal for the kibble half) and feed them in separate meals if your dog digests the mix better that way.

How does a 10 kg dog's raw food split?

At 2.5% of body weight: 250 g/day — 175 g muscle meat, 25 g raw edible bone, 13 g liver, 13 g other secreting organ and 25 g vegetables and fruit on the BARF model.

Which raw bones are safe?

Raw, meaty bones sized to the dog, always supervised. Never cooked bones — they splinter. And no weight-bearing bones from large animals for power chewers.
